Despite the difficulties the pandemic has presented, all three winners have managed to maintain exceptional grade point averages and are committed to pursuing their respective degrees. Javier Sarmiento, who is currently studying Digital Media at Buena Vista University states: “Though this past year with COVID-19 has been challenging, I have embraced these challenges and have managed to overcome not only every obstacle that has come my way, but also the struggles of my current financial situation. Getting this scholarship will enable me to follow my dreams and build a future for my family and my community.”
Dr. Anosh Ahmed shares how you should invest in your health: When it comes to caffeine consumption, less is more. High caffeine intakes result in poor sleep and can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Exercise is secondary to calorie restriction when it comes to losing weight, but everyone must reach optimal cardiac health to prevent future heart attacks and strokes. One of the best ways to start an exercise regimen that works is to walk 15 minutes a day. Gradually increase this until you are walking 10,000 steps per day or the equivalent of 5 miles. You can get these steps in as part of your daily routine or commit to going on walks. If you do not regularly get outside, treadmills are sufficient, along with gym exercise.
Dr. Anosh Ahmed obtained a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership before attending medical school. Who has been a role model to you and why? I’ve held my father as a role model from a young age because of the fact that he worked day and night to provide for his family. I know it sounds like I should be saying Bill Gates or someone out there like that, but my dad is a real live example of someone that I’ve seen who can work hard all day and night. He became paralyzed from the waist down because of a disease. How do you maintain a solid work life balance? It’s definitely hard. My phone is never off the hook. As far as I am concerned, there’s no such thing as a decent work/life balance if you truly have the passion that I have for my work. Until now, I have not mastered how to balance myself and my work, and that’s one of the things that I’m currently working on.
